Poetry by Bob Elmendorf

Luna

I walked by the sea one moon-night
in the water’s uncastling of the sand,
mixing the undertow with my fright

of a life alone, no swell rising into sight
to spread its silver on my waiting land.
I walked by the sea one moon-night

and planks, weeds, shells, stones and kites
in confusion lay upon the strand.
Mixing the undertow with my fright

that none could sink, swim or ride
but were expelled out of hand,
I walked by the sea one moon-night

and caught the moon strapless on the tide
unshored, buoyant in a cold romance.
Mixing the undertow with my fright

that I will never have another bride
to sail with me the wind at our command,
I walked by the sea one moon-night
mixing the undertow with my fright.
